Immediate, Professional Emergency Dental Care
Dental emergencies can happen unexpectedly, causing severe pain, discomfort, and potential long-term damage if not treated promptly. At Woodfield Dentistry, we provide urgent emergency dental care to help relieve pain, prevent complications, and restore your oral health as quickly as possible.
Understanding Dental Emergencies
What Qualifies as a Dental Emergency?
Many people are unsure whether their dental issue constitutes an emergency. Here are some common conditions that require immediate attention:
- Severe Tooth Pain – Persistent, sharp, or throbbing pain often indicates an underlying issue such as an infection, abscess, or deep cavity that requires urgent treatment.
- Broken, Chipped, or Cracked Teeth – Damage to a tooth can expose nerves and lead to increased sensitivity, pain, and the risk of infection or further breakage.
- Knocked-Out Tooth (Avulsed Tooth) – A knocked-out tooth requires immediate care. Acting quickly can significantly improve the chances of saving the tooth.
- Lost Fillings or Crowns – Exposed teeth can become highly sensitive and are at risk of further decay or breakage if left untreated.
- Swelling or Abscesses – A dental abscess is a serious infection that needs immediate attention to prevent further complications, including systemic infections.
- Bleeding Gums or Soft Tissue Injuries – Uncontrolled bleeding or deep lacerations in the mouth need urgent care to prevent excessive blood loss and infection.
What to Do in a Dental Emergency
If you are experiencing a dental emergency, follow these steps to minimize damage and alleviate pain before your appointment:
Call Our Office Immediately
Time is crucial in dental emergencies. Call or Text (519) 679-2891 to schedule an urgent appointment.
Manage Pain & Swelling
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen (if safe for you) to reduce discomfort.
- Apply a cold compress to the affected area to minimize swelling.
- Avoid using aspirin directly on the gums as it may cause irritation or burns.
Preserve a Knocked-Out Tooth
- If a tooth has been knocked out, pick it up by the crown (top part), not the root.
- Rinse it gently with water—do not scrub or remove any attached tissue.
- If possible, place the tooth back into its socket and bite down on a soft cloth to hold it in place.
- If reinsertion isn’t possible, store the tooth in a container of milk or saline solution until you can reach our office.
Protect Broken Teeth or Restorations
- If a tooth is broken or a filling/crown has fallen out, try to keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side.
- You can temporarily cover a lost filling with dental cement or sugarless gum until you see a dentist.
Emergency Dental Treatment Options
Our emergency dental treatments include:
Root Canal Therapy
A root canal is often necessary when a tooth’s pulp becomes infected due to deep decay, cracks, or trauma. This procedure helps save the tooth while eliminating pain and infection.
Tooth Extractions
In cases where a tooth is beyond repair due to extensive damage or infection, extraction may be the best option to prevent further complications.
Dental Crowns & Fillings
Broken or damaged teeth can be restored with durable tooth-colored fillings or custom-made dental crowns that blend seamlessly with your natural smile.
Treatment for Abscesses & Infections
A dental abscess requires immediate drainage and antibiotic treatment to prevent the infection from spreading. Our team provides effective treatment to relieve pain and eliminate infections.
Soft Tissue Injury Repair
For cuts, lacerations, or injuries to the lips, cheeks, or tongue, we provide suturing, pain management, and infection prevention treatments.
